Slow and Sluggish? Not These 13 Diesel Sports Cars

Posted by Scott Goldfarb on

The words “diesel engine” don’t typically invoke images of sleek and fast cars. But as diesel engine technology advances, car manufacturers are taking advantage of the improvements to design diesel sports cars that don’t disappoint. Here are 13 of the fastest diesel sports cars you can find on the market today.

1. Audi A8 4.2 TDI

This car packs a punch and can go from 0 to 62 miles per hour (mph) in just 4.7 seconds. The 4.2-liter TDI engine produces 384 horsepower (hp) while not skimping on the torque (getting 590 pound-feet of torque). On top of that, it averages 39.2 miles per gallon (mpg) and can even reach 155 mph.

2. Audi A4 3.0 TDI

With a top speed of 155 mph, this 268 hp 3.0-liter V6 diesel engine is not only fast, but it is also economical, too. The Audi A4 3.0 TDI averages 55.4 mpg. It can go from 0 to 62 mph in 5.3 seconds, and the interior is spacious and luxurious. It is even equipped with an excellent MMI infotainment system.

3. Bentley Bentayga Diesel

From the inside out, the Bentley Bentayga exudes luxury. Its looks don’t slow it down, though, as it can go from 0 to 62 mph in 4.8 seconds. The 4.0-liter V8 diesel engine gives this SUV a top speed of 168 mph.

4. Jaguar XF

The 3.0-liter turbocharged diesel engine uses over 440 pound-feet of torque to get this car going from 0 to 60 mph in 5.9 seconds. This Jaguar can get up to 140 mph and is a great option for someone looking for diesel-powered luxury.

5. BMW 640d

The 3.0-liter diesel engine pushes this car from 0 to 62 mph in just 5.3 seconds and has 313 hp. You can let your hair blow in the wind if you choose the convertible option since this car has a top speed of 155 mph.

6. Porsche Panamera 4S Diesel

This Porsche is equipped with the quickest diesel engine on the market, with a top speed of 177 mph and an acceleration of 0 to 62 mph in only 4.5 seconds. This 4.0-liter V8 diesel engine averages 42.1 mpg, and it does not disappoint on the plush interior.

7. BMW 335d xDrive

In just 4.8 seconds this car’s 3.0-liter diesel engine can take it from 0 to 62 mph and can increase beyond that up to 155 mph. With an impressive average of 49.6 mpg, this fast car is one of the most economical options on the list.

8. Porsche Macan S Diesel

This 6-cylinder diesel engine can get up to 142 mph, and can impressively get this SUV from 0 to 60 in 6.3 seconds. Despite its plush interior, it can make 258 hp.

9. BMW 435d xDrive

Averaging 50.4 mpg, this BMW is quick. It can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in a mere 4.7 seconds. You can find this 313 hp 3.0-liter diesel engine in both a convertible and a coupe model of this car.

10. Audi SQ7

Just like these diesel engine sports cars, this SUV was made for speed as it can go up to 155 mph and from 0 to 62 mph in 4.9 seconds. Just as impressively for the size of this vehicle, this 4.0-liter diesel engine averages nearly 40 mpg.

11. Audi A6 3.0 BiTDI

In 5 seconds flat, this 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 diesel engine can go from 0 to 62 mph. The Audi’s famous Quattro all-wheel-drive system contributes to this engine’s impressive 315 hp.

12. BMW 740d xDrive

The comparatively lightweight design of this car helps it reach from 0 to 62 mph in 5.2 seconds. The xDrive all-wheel-drive system helps power it to a top speed of 155 mph.

13. BMW 328d

This car has a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine used to make 180 hp. It can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 7.4 seconds and can reach 140 mph.

This list provides all the proof you need that diesel engines aren’t just limited to large, lethargic machines. Thanks to the advancements of turbochargers, diesel engines are gaining traction as more than just slow and powerful engines.
