When you start the car to leave for work, it’s unlikely that you think about all the processes happening under the hood. In a diesel engine, the fuel enters the combustion chamber, and the heat of the compressed air causes it to ignite. The ignition has to occur at the right time, so it’s essential to know how to set timing on 6.5 turbo diesel.

Without the timing mechanism, a diesel couldn’t run properly. It is a critical component that controls vital processes, and in the article, we’ll go over the steps to its optimization.

How to Set Timing on 6.5 Turbo Diesel

The timing determines the moment of the fuel’s injection into the combustion chamber. It triggers the spark plug to ignite the fuel-air mixture.

Steps to Set the Timing

Here are the steps on how to set timing on 6.5 turbo diesel:

1. Get the tools

You will need a timing light, a distributor clamp wrench, and a socket set to set the timing.

  • The timing light sets the ignition timing. It helps see the timing marks on the outer ring harmonic balancer. This enables you to adjust the distributor's position to ensure the spark plug fires correctly.
  • You need a distributor clamp wrench to loosen and tighten the clamp bolt on the distributor. If the distributor is accessible, you can use a regular wrench that fits the task.
  • A socket set for removing the bolts from the timing and other components that may be blocking your access to the harmonic balancer.

2. Preparation

There are several steps you can take to get ready for the task.

  • Locate the harmonic balancer. It looks like a wheel, and you can find it in the front of the engine.
  • Locate the harmonic balancer's timing marks.
  • Disconnect the vacuum to prevent it from affecting the timing.
  • Check for any accessories like air conditioning set to ON and turn them OFF.

3. Start the engine

Now that the timing light is connected, get the engine running until it reaches its optimal running temperature. It should be at the operating level because the timing affects the temperature. The fuel is denser when the engine is cold, and it affects the timing of the combustion.

Observe the increase of heat from the gauge. Once it reaches the necessary temperature, you can turn off the engine and move on to the next step.

4. Connect the timing light

The timing light will tell the timing of the ignition. It works by measuring the time between the firing of the ignition and the signal for the timing mark passing through the light. This will make it possible to tell if the timing of the ignition is too slow or too fast and by how much.

To connect the timing light, connect its red positive lead to the positive of the car’s battery. Then, attach the spark plug to the most forward cylinder of the engine from the driver’s side. Finally, place the clap of the inductive pickup around the spark plug and secure it in place.

5. Check the timing

Aim the timing light towards the harmonic balancer and squeeze its trigger to activate it. Crank the engine, and it will flash the most forward cylinder fires each time, lighting the marks on the harmonic balancer.

6. Adjust the timing

Once you know if the timing is advanced or retarded, you can use the adjustment bolt on the distributor to set the timing. Rotate the distributor clockwise or counterclockwise until the marks match the specific timing of the engine. 

You can find the engine's timing specifications in its service manual, but there should be a TDC mark that you should use as a reference. Move the distributor clockwise until the timing mark aligns with the top dead-center mark.

A car that has gone through a considerable amount of mileage may have different needs in terms of combustion timing, which is why it’s important to conduct a good measurement.

7. Final details

Tighten the distributor with the clamping wrench and reconnect the vacuum line. Once you complete all the tasks, it’s time to test drive the vehicle. Listen to the engine for any uncharacteristic noise and observe how it works while driving.

If you sense any issues during the test drive, repeat the process again or as many times as needed until you get the timing right.
