Track or Racing: For track racing, always maximise your horsepower. Large-scale frame turbos or twin turbos work great here, but come with a ton of extra requirements.

Towing/Off-Road: Mid-range torque is the core focus. Check for durability and responsiveness, especially with VGT turbos for diesels.

2. Understanding Turbocharger Basics

Before we select a turbo, it is important to understand the basics of a turbocharger. A turbocharger increases an engine's power by forcing more air (and fuel) into the combustion chamber. This is achieved via a turbine and compressor system that utilises your exhaust gases. The science is easy in theory; however, the execution requires many specs and engineering trade-offs.

Compressor Map: A graph depicting the turbo's efficiency spread over various airflow and pressure ratio combinations. A compressor map turbo diagram balances fundamental engine parameters and the power target RPM range to avoid turbocharger overspeed. 

Trim: This is the ratio between the size of the turbine and compressor wheels. A higher trim allows better airflow and powers the top-end, whereas a lower trim guarantees quicker spool-up, hence better low-end throttle response.

A/R Ratio (Area/Radius): This impacts the thrust air's spooling rate and volumetric displacement. An apex A/R ratio gives more air for increased horsepower but slower response. In contrast, the lower end offers quicker boost response useful during streets or daily driving.

Turbo Lag: The time between pressing the accelerator and feeling the boost is turbo lag. Smaller turbos spool faster and have less lag, but larger turbos provide more power at higher RPMs, although they take longer to spool.

Blow Off Valve (BOV): Helps protect the turbo by bypassing excess pressure when the throttle is lifted, thus preventing compressor surge.  

Intercooler: An intercooler cools air before it enters the engine and makes it denser, which improves combustion. This is important because the air is heated due to compression by the turbo.

4. Don't Forget the Supporting Mods– They Are Just As Important as the Turbo Itself

Placing a turbo on your engine seemingly is the quickest way to achieve big power, but doing so without the supporting mods is a bust. Adding a turbo requires a well-rounded and balanced approach as it doesn't work in isolation. Failing to make necessary upgrades alongside the additions can result in the build being a ticking time bomb.

Fuel System: If the engine's air intake increases, like with a turbo, the fuel system should be able to keep up. Stock pumps and injectors are not able to provide the correct support. Use high-flow fuel injectors alongside a performance fuel pump and adjustable pressure regulator. This combination makes sure that the engine receives adequate fuel during boost.

Intercooler: Air Compression Syncord puts out a lot of heat and increases performance. If kept within the correct size, an intercooler, especially one that is air-to-water, will lower the intake temperature and ensure that detonation is avoided while improving combustion efficiency.

Exhaust System: It is critical for your turbo's performance that it breathes freely. To do this, you will need a performance downpipe, high-flow catalytic converter (or test pipe depending on your setup) and cat-back exhaust system. These components, in conjunction, reduce turbo lag and exhaust backpressure. 

ECU Tuning: It is impossible to negotiate or exempt this step. ECU tuning, blanketed under the single term, means many procedures such as adjusting boost levels, setting air/fuel ratios, ignition timing, etc. Not doing so means that there will not only be poor performance, but your car can essentially ‘self-explode'.

Engine Internals: Your stock engine components will struggle if you intend to run them on high boost levels. There is far more stress and combustion pressure placed on the forged pistons, and with them, the more powerful connecting rods. The same can be said for upgraded head studs, too, where the additional combat would be detrimental.

Sparing supporting mods is akin to constructing a castle on loose sand. Obviously, your turbo bolts up just fine, and that's the easy part. Without a proper foundation, you will experience underperformance. The worst is complete failure. Total construction with reliable power and boost must be put together with thought into the entire build order.
